Yesterday I read that America is one of a few countries that has the audacity to tax not only Olympic prizes but the actual medals themselves: the total tax bill (per medal) is as follows: $8,986 per gold medal/prize, $5,385 per silver, and $3,502 per bronze. Kind of makes bringing home medals to the US kind of a burden, right? Well, “tea party darling” Marco Rubio just introduced a bill that would end this foolishness. Hurray, Rubio likes tax cuts!
But you know what else Rubio likes that I just can’t ignore:
- The Patriot Act: he voted for its extension.
- The 2012 NDAA’s provision that authorizes indefinite detainment by the military without trial (he voted for that too)
- PIPA ..nevermind, he was just for it(and co-sponsored it) before he was against it.
- Subsidies for Big Sugar: they scratched his back while campaigning, so he returned the favor.
- And what I think he loves most of all: beating the global war drum: he thinks the Iraq war has made us safer, he’s hyping up war with Iran, and wants to fight Syria’s battles for them. War drum? Sorry- he likes to refer to it as a “robust foreign policy“.
Two years ago I actually wanted to like Marco Rubio. Over this short time he’s proven that the right and left wing alike have learned absolutely nothing about adhering to the Constitution. So while some people might become distracted by Rubio’s fist-pump to the little guys with his Olympic tax cut bill, I see it as one minor hit among hundreds of misses.
