Songwriter to the stars and turbo-wealthy socialite Denise Rich has decided to call it quits with the US and is giving up her citizenship here. (Actually she did this in November 2011 but it wasn’t discovered until recently.) Of course her lawyer said the reason is that she wants to live closer to her partner and family in London. I guess love can make you do crazy things, including giving up your passport, but it’s painfully obvious that Rich is protecting her wealth. Denise Rich is, well, very very rich. And I’m not knocking that; people should enjoy the fruits of their labor and not be accused of being Scrooge McDuck. However, it’s the hypocrisy that is the problem.

Denise Rich isn’t just a famous songwriter- she’s the ex-wife of commodities trader Marc Rich, a billionaire who got himself into some trouble in the 80′s with tax evasion and illegal oil trading and became a fugitive. He was pardoned by Bill Clinton on his last day in office. This turned heads because Denise had made huge donations to the Democratic Party and The Clinton Library during Bill’s time in office, so accusations were made that she had bought her husband’s pardon. She plead the Fifth on that one, so she would like us to assume that she is just a big believer of the Democratic Party.
